Discord moderation and tools

Bot permissions, invite-link filter, /mod commands, scheduled posts and welcomes.

Growth plan and above

Your Discord bot can also help run the server. These settings are in Discord, under the automation and moderation tabs.

Give the bot the right permissions

Answering questions only needs the bot to read and send messages. Moderation needs more. In Server SettingsRoles, give the bot's role:

  • Manage Messages for the invite-link filter and /mod purge
  • Moderate Members for /mod timeout
  • Kick Members and Ban Members for /mod kick, ban and unban
  • Manage Roles for holder roles (Web3), with the bot's role placed above the holder role

Invite-link filter

In automation, turn on the invite-link filter to delete links to other Discord servers (discord.gg, discord.com/invite and similar). You can pick channels where links are allowed, and choose to post a short public warning when a link is removed. The filter applies to everyone, moderators included.

The /mod command

Only people with the matching Discord permission see and can use each one.

CommandWhat it doesNeeds
/mod warnLogs a warning and tells the member publiclyManage Messages
/mod timeoutTimes out for 1 minute to 28 daysModerate Members
/mod caseShows the last 10 moderation actionsManage Messages
/mod kickRemoves the memberKick Members
/mod banBans, optionally deleting up to 7 days of their messagesBan Members
/mod unbanUnbans by user IDBan Members
/mod purgeDeletes the last 1 to 100 messages (not older than 14 days)Manage Messages

In moderation, pick a mod-log channel to get a post for every action, and see the full case log.

On Discord, warnings don't trigger automatic mutes or bans. Moderators decide the next step.

Scheduled messages

In automation, schedule posts to a channel: once, every 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12 hours, daily or weekly. Start from a template (announcement, event, drop or simple), up to 1,900 characters.

Welcome new members

Turn on the welcome under Brandingmember welcome. It's posted in your server's system channel, so make sure one is set in Discord's server settings.

When a member needs your team

/developia escalate emails you and adds the note to UnansweredFeedback. The Talk to a human button pings the role you set under connection → human escalation, or emails you if no role is set. See Talking to a person.
